A Zamindari Lodge with a heart
Deep in the heart of the mythic Chambal area, on land that has been with the family for centuries, set amongst acres of woodlands and pasture, stands Mela Kothi. As the name suggests, Rai Saheb Suraj Pal Singh built Mela Kothi in the 1890s as a base camp for the family’s bi-annual cattle fair. As the years went by and the fair lost its popularity, Rai Saheb's great-grandson, IIT engineer Ram Pratap Singh and his environmental scientist wife Anu decided to restore the property to its former glory. Hence, they opened Mela Kothi as a lodge in 2007. The couple ensured that the property runs on the principles of eco-conservation. The rooms are full of character and the sprawling grounds remind you of a bygone stately era. Anu and Ram are affable & knowledgeable hosts who advise you on excursions and activities; one of their recommendations is a riverboat safari on the Chambal River which has often been called the cleanest river in India. The food often showcases family recipes and uses organic produce from their farm. Their team is passionate and motivated; many of them are birding and wildlife enthusiasts who can guide you on walks and tours. With its historic setting and serene backdrop, Mela Kothi is a destination where no wildlife lover will be left disappointed.
Spread across the sweeping grounds around the main house, the Mela Kothi has 13 rooms of 5 different kinds. The rooms have an individualistic character while retaining the central theme of the overall construction.
This is a luxury heritage-restored room in the main building of Mela Kothi. It comes with one double bed, access to the library, and a front and rear verandah with a private sit-out. The room is furnished with period furniture.
