Nature’s Coffee Escape
You'll hear about Param as someone who finds the balance between life and his love of nature, as someone who loves tracking a bird call, without knowing if he’ll find one. Then he's there at the door, and the estate starts making sense. Aambal began with a shared sunset, with Param on a ridge and his friend, watching the light fall over the valley, realizing this was the place he wanted to call home. He named it after the water lily that drifts, unhurried, across the estate's still ponds, and that you'll feel before you can explain it. Walk in and the architecture talks to you about warm stone, open courtyards, something of Madurai's grounded soul and a quiet nod to Geoffrey Bawa's tropical modernism, though nobody will lecture you about either. Your shoulders just drop.
The living room opens wide, light bouncing in off the pool just beyond the windows, and somewhere close by, Padmini param’s wife, is probably the reason something smells like it's about to be very good. Ask Param to walk you through the plantation and he'll do it at a pace that has nothing to do with getting anywhere but stopping for a bird you'd have missed, a bloom you wouldn't have noticed, a story about the land that exists nowhere but in his memory. Mornings arrive carrying the sweet, faint breath of coffee blossoms, and you'll end up by the pool, plate going cold, not really thinking about breakfast, thinking instead about how long it's been since you had nowhere to be. That's Aambal. Less a place you visit, more a pace you fall into.
