A quiet retreat by the backwaters and coconut groves
Taking a traditional long boat across the backwaters of Vembanad Lake, you arrive at Phillipkutty’s Farm, a peaceful cluster of seven cottages on a manmade island in the backwaters of Kerela. One of the women from the three generations that call this place home is always there to greet you with warmth.
Anya and her mother Anu run the farm alongside her grandmother, each bringing something special to the experience. The island itself was shaped in the late 1950s by Anya’s grandfather, Mr. Phillipkutty, at the request of the Kerala Government to create paddy fields with year-round water access. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that her father Vinod welcomed guests to the island, starting with just three cottages built using reclaimed wood and local craftsmanship.
Guests fell in love with the charm of these spaces and the hospitality of the family. Soon after, four more cottages followed, all reflecting traditional Kerala architecture. Set within a working coconut plantation, the stay offers more than just comfort, it is an immersion into a way of life.
Whether you’re sharing grandmother’s recipes over long, laughter-filled meals or exploring the lush surroundings, every moment at Phillipkutty’s feels personal. Nature walks, birdwatching, and the slow rhythm of backwater life shape the rest of your stay here. It is not just a getaway, it is a journey into Kerala’s heart, told through the stories and hospitality of one remarkable family.
The waterfront cottages are built in traditional style, each with heritage elements from the family home. Meals are served in a shared space, bringing guests together over local food. Two cottages are interconnected, making them ideal for families or two couples traveling together.
Each of the seven waterfront villas is spacious and thoughtfully designed, with antique furniture and intricately carved doors and windows collected over time. The floors are laid in rustic clay tiles, ceilings in warm wood, and a red-oxide verandah wraps around each cottage. Windows are fully netted to keep insects out, ensuring a comfortable stay close to nature.
