Sunnymead Estate

Story

One of the oldest residential buildings in Shimla, Sunnymead Estate is a heritage cottage built at the turn of the last century that looks straight out of an English fairy tale. Set at the edge of an Oak and Rhododendron forest, this quaint cottage is reminiscent of Shimla of Yore, lovingly refurbished by its owner Madhavi Bhatia and retains all its original appeal.

Madhavi inherited the property from her grandaunt and moved from Delhi to run Sunnymead as a homestay almost 10 years ago to conserve the property and a way of life. The house is set in a delightful garden, looked after by the gardener Motilal, who has been with the family for over 40 years. The bedrooms are comfortable and elegantly decorated with period furniture and decor. Madhu is Madhavi's trusted chef, who whips up the most delectable fare. The warm welcoming crew includes three resident dogs and two cats!

Sunnymead Estate is the perfect stay-in-a-period homestay to explore the glorious countryside and the hill town of Shimla.

At Sunnymeade Estate, the owner's have chosen to preserve the traditional Himachali Dhajji architecture. Specialist stone masons of the dying dhajji artform were called in especially to repair the estate. The exterior paint is still the traditional lime wash. Madhavi’s love for good food passes on to the guests as she treats them with exquisite crafted three course dinner menus.

The hosts have been ecologically conscious and used salvaged material in the refurbishment where possible. They also harvest roof rainwater and use it for the WCs in the guest bathrooms.
